I still remember the day that I bought my first car. I thought it was the most perfect vehicle in the world, and I vowed to care for it diligently. Unfortunately, within a few days I had forgotten about my promise, and I started tossing fast food wrappers in the back like everyone else. After awhile I realized that neglecting my car was turning the inside into a garbage pit, and I decided to learn how to take better care of my vehicle. BMW automobiles take skill and finesse to repair due to their sophisticated, high-performance parts. That isn't to say you can't assess the situation and perform a few basic repairs to sudden problems. If your BMW seems to shake and rattle as your tires roll across the road, there are a few inspection points to consider for proper maintenance, repair or at least knowing what to expect from the mechanic.
What Causes A Bumpy Ride?
If your car is shaking a lot, you don't need to spend a lot of time guessing at the issue or wondering if you should continue. At the safest chance possible, stop in a well-lit, safe area and inspect your vehicle.
Flat or low tires can lead to a bumpy ride. A flat tire is easy enough to spot, but many people are unable to assess a low tire. Even a fully inflated tire has a bit of a flat edge to it as it touches the ground, so squeeze the tire a bit to find out if the rubber gives way to your fingers.
If in doubt, go to an air filling station. These stations are found at most gas stations, travel rest stops and mechanic shops. Read the side of your tire to find the pressure limit, which is measured in pounds per square inch (psi) and only fill the tire to that number. Most vehicle tires fill between 36 and 44psi.
Your engine may have problems as well. Once you're stopped in a safe place, put the vehicle in neutral. Open your hood and look inside the car to observe your engine's idle status. Does the engine seem to shake violently as if not held in place properly? This could be caused by missing mounting screws that hold the engine in the right place or an imbalance on different sides of the engine.
Axle Alignment Problems Need Professional Attention
You may have a high-performance vehicle, but the roads may not match your sophisticated tastes. If there are a lot of bumps and sinking drops in the road, regular driving can quickly result in reduced performance.
A vehicle's shock absorbers (often simply called 'shocks') are designed to not only make the drive less bumps for you, but to reduce the violent impact of sudden bumps on other parts of your car. If the shocks are becoming old or if the terrain is rough enough, the shocks may be bypassed and your axles may suffer because of it.
The car's axle is responsible for keeping the tires spinning in place. An axle is a precision-aligned bar that needs to keep the wheels in the right position, as having a wheel resting higher or lower than other wheels results in a bumpy ride.
When the axle is bent by collision or constantly rough terrain, the situation only continues to get worse. More bumpiness due to a bent axle leads to more bending. The more your axle is bent, the less simple a repair will be.
